What is a NaN?
If the data does not fall into the limits of physical reality for an estuary (for example, a negative salinity value, or a temperature of 170 degF) the data is filtered out and the computer records a NaN - which is short for Not a Number. This can happen if a sensor fails (batteries die, water leakage, impaled foreign object, biofouling, etc.)
